How Often Bent Irons Actually Need a Recheck
Loft and lie do not stay where you paid to put them, and the drift is invisible until it is large.
There is a particular conversation that happens two or three times a month at this bench. A golfer brings in a set that was properly fitted somewhere reputable, two or three seasons ago, and says the irons have started missing left. We put the heads on the gauge and find that four of them have gone upright by a degree and a half.
The golfer's swing is fine. The fitting was fine. The clubs simply moved, which is what clubs do, and nobody scheduled a moment to find out.
Why Heads Move at All
A hosel is a bent piece of metal, and metal that gets struck against the ground several thousand times a season will migrate. This is not a defect. It is the same property that makes irons adjustable in the first place: a head soft enough to bend to your spec is soft enough to bend away from it.
Movement concentrates in three situations. Firm ground, because impact loads are higher. Thicker rough, because the head twists through resistance. And any contact with a root, rock or cart path, which can move a head a full degree in one strike.

Golfers who play more than sixty rounds a year sit at the top of every range. Golfers who play mostly in July and August also sit at the top, because that is when the ground is hardest.
Why a Degree and a Half Matters
A commonly cited rule of thumb is that one degree of lie error moves a seven iron shot about four yards offline at typical distances. The figure varies with club length and speed, but the direction of the effect is not in dispute: upright sends it left for a right-handed golfer, flat sends it right.
Now apply that unevenly across a set. If your six iron has gone upright and your eight iron has gone flat, you have a bag where consecutive clubs miss in opposite directions. No amount of practice resolves that, and most golfers respond by building compensations that then have to be unlearned once the clubs are corrected.
Setting the Cadence
Our published interval is eighteen months, and it is deliberately shorter than the two or three years often suggested elsewhere. Three reasons.
- Local ground is firm for a substantial part of the year, which is the primary accelerant.
- Forged sets are popular here and they are the fast movers.
- A recheck is cheap. Bending eight heads costs less than one club, so a slightly over-frequent cadence costs almost nothing and an under-frequent one costs strokes for months.
Verify Rather Than Assume
One habit worth adopting: when a shop bends your clubs, ask for the before and after numbers head by head. Any bench that does the work properly will have written them down anyway. If they cannot produce them, you have no baseline for the next recheck and the whole exercise starts over from scratch every time.
